Notes:

To maintain the color and health of Montopora it is imperative to maintain absolutely perfect water quality in an established reef aquarium, high pH, calcium and alkalinity levels, and maintain extremely low phosphate and nitrate levels. Montopora demands intense lighting, preferably supplied by metal halide lights, and strong, preferably intermittent water flow. Color will vary depending on the lighting conditions in your aquarium. Actinic lighting or metal halide lighting heavy in the blue spectrum will enhance their color.

 Green Birdnest

This coral is brown with green or pink highlights, solid pink, purple, or yellow in color. The corals collected at greater depths where wave action is subdued are generally more delicate with thinner stalks

Make no mistake, no leather is as spectacular, more difficult to care for, or as popular as the Yellow Leather. Does best in very bright lighting, and strong water movement. Most Yellow Leathers are collected from extremely shallow water where they are exposed to intense sunlight and brutal, constantly moving current. Proper water movement is critical for these corals. A direct flow of water from a pump "drilling into the coral " will destroy newly imported pieces, but weak current is equally bad. Strong water flow throughout the tank, for example, directed at tank walls, is recommended. Alternating or pulsing water flow is even better. When placing them in your aquarium, find a good spot and leave them alone. This cannot be stressed enough. Excessive handling can damage newly arrived specimens. Once established, these corals are not as touchy as their initial requirements sound. Larger specimens are more "billowy" than smaller ones, and are notably more difficult to ship. Smaller specimens are more forgiving overall. REMEMBER leather corals expand and contract greatly, and can expand from small when you receive them to larger over a period of weeks or months. There are no other Leather Corals (or even anything photosynthetic) currently collected in this particular color of yellow.

One of the easiest "corals", mushrooms will thrive in most aquariums. Placing pieces lower in the aquarium for indirect lighting and low water movement promotes the best expansion, but they will but will adapt to a wide variety of conditions. In fact, you'd have to really try to kill these! Feeding is not necessary but may enhance growth. Individuals that are only tiny polyps when collected can grow to impressive mushrooms in only a few months. Ricordea mushrooms generally collected very small, but they can, and typically do grow rapidly in most aquariums. Color will vary with each specimen.

One of the easier to maintain hard corals, Orange Fungia is one of the rarer color forms. Fungia can thrive in a wide range of conditions. Acclimates best in low water flow and indirect lighting, they can adapt to a wide variety of conditions. Best placed on sand bottoms, rather than on rocks, as the tissue is easily damaged by rubbing against rocks. Fungia is nearly identical to Plate Coral but without tentacles. Regular Fungia is less expensive than Orange, while Purple Fungia Fungia impressive and highly prized.

Also known as Moon and Pineapple Coral, Favia and Favities Brain Corals, there are a variety of similar forms sold as "Moon Coral". These are a hardy group of corals that can do great in any well-maintained reef aquarium. They acclimate best in mild water flow and low to medium lighting, but can adapt to a wide variety of conditions. Color can and form can and will vary greatly; some pieces are greenish, some are reddish brown, some have both colors, some have light colored corallites with dark surrounding tissue, some are the opposite. These corals have thin tissue and do not expand like large polyp corals. A good coral for beginners, and admired by experts, 'Moon Coral" is frequently available.

The ever-popular Torch Coral can do well under excellent conditions and are not difficult to maintain, but we do not recommend them for those new to the hobby, basically because they're rough shippers. Most specimens are a beautiful cream-tan color with contrasting tips. They may appear semi-transparent when well expanded. Actinic lighting will help bring out their color. While they're beautiful and can thrive under the right conditions, Euphyllias should not be considered by apprehensive hobbyists. If you're nervous about mail ordering coral or new to the hobby, Euphyllia may not be for you. These corals have sharp skeletons covered in extremely thin tissue, which is inevitably scuffed up by collection and shipping, so "perfect looking" non-expanded specimens are virtually non-existent. Once expand they look great, but the unexpanded skeletons will look a little scruffy to those unaccustomed to handling these corals. In branching types, it is not unusual for one branch to die after shipping, but since the branches are not connected, the others will be fine. If you're getting nervous, buy this one locally! There are many other corals that travel better, although Euphyllia aren't as bad as we're intentionally making them sound. All Euphyllia should be given plenty of room to expand, and then some, because they expand large and have sweeper tentacles that extend several inches at night that can sting other corals. Acclimates best in low current and low to medium lighting. Do not place directly under intense lighting or expose to high water flow. If you've read this far, you might give these beautiful corals a try!

One of the best soft corals for the aquarium, this variety of Xenia is known in the trade as 'Super Blue Xenia'. Since we don't want to over sell it, we'll just call it "Blue Xenia" and say it is indeed really nice stuff! It fares best in medium to very bright lighting, and strong water movement, directed around the coral (not drilling directly into the coral). These soft corals, (often referred to as polyps) can grow quickly in the right environment. Supplemental feeding can stimulate growth, but be sure not to over do it. Actinic lighting will help bring out the color of "blue" Xenia.

One of the best soft corals for the aquarium, all reef aquariums need some Finger Leathers! The term "Finger Leather" encompasses a wide variety of branching and lobed type Sinnularia and Lobphytum leather corals. FIJI Finger Leathers are generally somewhat nicer than "regular leather corals", leaning more towards lighter color shades and more polyps. The image shown is a generalization (with polyps closed) We've never seen a leather coral we didn't love! The real appeal of these corals is their hardiness, fast growth and interesting shapes. There are also more colorful types of finger leathers available. Most types do best in medium to bright lighting, and strong water movement., but can adapt to a wide variety of conditions. They can do thrive in any well-maintained reef aquarium
